If you live any considerable distance from the capital, it is probably a bug-bear in your travel life that the cheapest flights are generally from London airports. Don’t ask me why this is, I’ve never quite figured it out myself, but the fact remains that when you look for package holidays and search for price lowest to highest, the first search results will almost always be from Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, or Stansted.

It’s a pain, I’m sure you’ll agree.

Despite this, simply because it’s one of those annoying things in life we can’t change, I find it best to go with the flow and try and take advantage of the lower prices anyway. It’s not always possible, but sometimes you might find a flight or package deal that’s so cheap, even with the added travel factored in, it’s still cheaper to fly from London compared to your more local terminal. If this is the case, book it! I regularly do this and book a parking spot at the airport through Airparks.co.uk. You might think this all sounds like too much hassle, but look at it this way, travel is a given, you can’t get to where you want to be without putting yourself out a little, so if you can do it and save money, why not?

I recently did exactly that, and booked parking at Stansted Airport. Whilst yes, I have to travel to London, rather than flying from Birmingham or Manchester, I still managed to save a decent amount of money, even with the added travel factored in, and this is what I will put towards extra enjoyment during my time away. Personally I’d rather spend my money enjoying myself on my holiday, than spending it on a more expensive flight.

It’s a personal decision I guess, but it’s certainly something to consider the next time you’re looking at holidays. You could even look at indirect flights to see if this saves you extra cash. I’ve flown indirect a couple of times, and whilst it did add time onto my travel day, inevitably, it wasn’t too bad because I made sure I didn’t have a long connection time at my in-between airport. I look at it this way – travel days aren’t really part of your holiday time anyway, so a couple of extra hours won’t make a difference, provided it’s not more than that.

When it comes to saving money, it’s important to think outside the box a little, because there are sneaky ways out there to keep all-important cash in your pocket.
